John Littlefield (aka Johnny) pursued a career in theater in college and conservatory and received his MFA in theater at Temple University, where he also taught. Realizing he couldn’t teach his students the business side of show business, he ventured to New York, where he found his niche in off-Broadway regional theater and TV.

Most notable is his role as Gary Sinclair on “Another World,” as well as numerous guest-starring roles on “Law & Order,” “Roswell,” “Navy NCIS” and “West Wing.” Recently, he costarred with Anthony Hopkins in the motion picture “Beowulf,” and also appeared in “Fracture” and “Slipstream.”

But it was the hard times, honing the skills learned from his dad as a do-it-yourself handyman and carpenter that led to a career hosting such shows as the “Dude Room” on the Discovery Channel and working with Habitat for Humanity for CMT’s “Home Blitz.” He is currently a co-host and designer on ABC’s “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition.”

What was the “ah-ha” moment that made you start taking your health seriously?
I think it was many things. I have always been incredibly active, and as I got older, my knees did not agree with my athletic choices. So four knee surgeries later, I decided to take a healthier approach to my body. That included a change in diet, exercise routine, etc.

But also, look at your parents. That is your genetic road map staring right back at you. Ask yourself, “Do you want to go down that road, yes or no?”

Do you have a secret habit that is part of your healthy lifestyle?
I juice every morning!

If you could permanently get rid of one bad habit, what would it be?
Salt! Some people have a sweet tooth; I have a salt tooth. But if it’s a dark chocolate, caramel and a sea salt combo, forget it! I’m in!

If you could get a free pass forever with one bad habit, what would it be?
New York pizza! And a nice IPA.

What is your greatest health achievement or milestone?
Finishing the Dublin Marathon with my pal Jimmy Murtha (cancer survivor) in the freezing rain.

What is your biggest health hang-up in others?
Obesity in children.

Run, walk, ride or swim?
YES, and don’t forget hike, surf and skateboard.

If you were a fruit or vegetable, what kind would you be?
Rapini (broccoli rabe), sautéed. Don’t forget the garlic, extra virgin olive oil and sea salt.

If you could “superpower” one of your five senses, what would it be and why?
Smell. My nose is good in the kitchen, but say it’s at a wine tasting, and they ask, “Johnny, are you picking up the oak and the cherries and the hint of bell pepper …” Seriously? Bell pepper? No, I’m not. “Can’t we just drink it with a juicy steak?”

If you could break a world endurance record, what would it be?
I just finished reading “Inside Seal Team Six” by Don Mann. Just to have a chance to workout with Don and his fellow SEALS and be standing at the end is good enough for me!

If you could tell one thing to your adolescent self, what would it be?
Slow down, kid! But I never listened anyway.
